Visitors from all over the world flock to the Ocean Crest Pier, which is the only privately owned and run pier on Oak Island and one of the greatest fishing spots, tournaments, and viewing areas! The Fisherman’s Post voted this pier the #1 fishing pier in North Carolina. After a full day of fishing, most anglers leave the pier with at least one good catch or two, as well as a desire to return the next day for more. It’s the perfect place to spend a day full of friendly competition
The Ocean Crest Pier makes a splash for a pretty big reason: it’s grand size! The pier is one of the longest in the southern Cape Fear region, at 893 feet long and with a 50′ foot kingfish area. It’s also one of the most popular when the fishing is good, thanks to the wooden gazebo that covers the “T” at the end of the huge structure and provides lots of shade for those wanting to catch a fish. The pier is all wood, with high railings and plenty of bench seating for people to sit back and wait for the first bite.
The pier, along with its surrounding marshes, provides a range of additional services for fishermen and their families, such as a tackle and bait shop to load up on supplies, rod rentals for visitors without equipment, and plenty of snacks, ice cream, and beer to cool off on hot summer days. There are landing nets and cleaning stations on site, as well as handicapped accessible restrooms and beach access for people who want to take a break from a hard day of fishing and simply relax in the sun and surf.
The Island Way Fine Dining, which is open only during the summer months for delectable fresh cuisine, is located near the pier. Hungry patrons may view the distant views of what’s biting along the Ocean Crest Pier while dining on world-class seafood and steak dishes with a spectacular oceanfront location overlooking the water and pier. In addition, the restaurant offers a bar for lazy afternoon cocktails or an opportunity to have a cold one with friends while visiting.
In the summer, the most common catches include pompano, sheepshead, flounder, bluefish, speckled trout (one of the region’s favorite catches), Spanish Mackerel (a wonderful eating fish), King Mackerel (another popular catch), and drums in the shoulder seasons or colder months. Patrons of the Pier House may converse with the locals at the pier house to learn what’s being caught and in season, or they may go to the pier’s online galleries and fishing report to discover what other lucky anglers have landed.
The pier is a popular venue for regular fishing competitions due to the great fishing that Ocean Crest Pier and Oak Island are known for. Every year, a number of fishing tournaments are held on or near the pier, including the Oak Island Open Pier Tournament in May, the OCP (Ocean Crest Pier) Fun Fest in June, and even an Oak Island Kids Fishing Derby in late July for children ages 12 and under!
